Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas

Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas is recognised as one of the best wildlife parks in Australia, providing visitors the chance to observe up close a huge range of flora and fauna across four habitats: rainforest, wetlands, grasslands, and savannah.

The Advanced Eco-accredited Wildlife Habitat is a wildlife immersion exhibit - an open and interactive environment for guests and animals to mingle in a spacious natural setting. Visitors wander along elevated boardwalks, observing up close a huge range of flora and fauna as birds fly and animals roam freely.

Experience the wildlife from the surrounding habitats:

The Wetlands: A multitude of wetland bird species can be viewed foraging for food in waterways beneath the Stork Walk. Black-necked Storks fly freely through this habitat and during breeding season, impressive displays can be seen.

The Rainforest: A meandering walkway allows visitors to experience different levels of the rainforest, from the forest floor to the canopy. Follow the Cassowary Walk to view local species such as the endangered southern cassowary, the Boyd’s forest dragon and colourful eclectus parrots.

The Grasslands: On the Wallaby Walk you can interact with and hand-feed kangaroos and wallabies. A host of wild native birdlife use the billabong as a sanctuary. Boardwalks overlook lagoons where both the estuarine and freshwater crocodiles lurk beneath the water or bask on the sunlit banks.

The Savannah: This habitat offers an opportunity to wander amongst the richly coloured birds of northern Australia’s open woodland. Marvel at the complexity of the locally endangered and endemic finches, watch woodswallows swooping overhead and search for the smallest species that live in the undergrowth, from quail to the endangered Northern Bettong.

Immersed in the Wetlands Habitat, our restaurant is the setting for our sumptuous Breakfast With The Birds and Lunch With The Lorikeets buffets. Our Curlew Café & Bar is open from 8am-3pm, serving snacks, drinks and ice-creams.

Join one of the free guided tours or presentations throughout the day to learn about the intriguing behaviours and fascinating worlds of our native Australian animals, such as the rare Lumholtz's tree-kangaroo, the southern cassowary, and the black-necked stork. Learn fascinating facts about koalas, and crocodiles with the opportunity to have your photo taken holding one of these animals (extra cost).

The Wildlife Habitat is committed to the conservation of native species via its Wildlife Care Centre and its extensive involvement in other conservation programs and research. You can go Behind- the-Scenes and see the ongoing work involved in caring for injured, orphaned and sick animals.
