Canberra

Your Australian travel bucket list isn’t complete without a visit to the nation’s capital city. Canberra is a hub of social, cultural, and political activity, making it a perfect tourism destination. Visit some of Australia’s premiere cultural institutions, such as the National Museum of Australia, the National Gallery of Australia, and the National Film and Sound Archive. Stop by a few of Canberra’s forty wineries or one of its renowned breweries. Time your trip around one of the many festivals held throughout the year, like the Canberra Balloon Spectacular every March, Floriade in spring, and the National Folk Festival over the Easter weekend.

Canberra is also an ideal destination for nature lovers and environmentalists alike. The city runs on 100% renewable energy and is surrounded by dedicated nature reserves and parks. Bicycle around the iconic Lake Burley Griffin, explore thousands of species of rare trees in the National Arboretum, and experience Australia’s native wildlife in the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve.

There are lots of events on offer for LGBTQIA+ visitors to Canberra. Follow Fuse Magazine for up-to-date information on LGBTQIA+ events throughout the city, including Kaleidoscope, an annual queer art exhibition sponsored by Fuse. Bushdance is an annual fundraising event that brings together the Canberran queer community, hosted by The Canberra Gay and Lesbian Tennis Club. SpringOUT Festival is Canberra’s annual queer pride event, which has been providing a platform for LGBTQIA+ pride since 1999. You can also attend a performance by Canberra’s world-famous LGBTQIA+ choir.
